What is it used for?

A smoke detector senses airborne smoke and signals the alarm system. A self-contained smoke alarm combines sensing and a local sounder. Optical sensing is common, but the exact technology must suit the environment.

  • Indoor spaces where smoke detection is required and environmental conditions are suitable

What does it offer?

  • Warning of smoke before occupants may notice the fire

Types and key differences

Conventional
Signals through a conventional alarm zone.
Addressable
Has an individual identity on a compatible panel.
Standalone smoke alarm
Combines smoke sensing and a local sounder. Check the specified interconnection and power requirements.

What needs checking before selection?

  • Steam, dust and aerosols can cause unwanted alarms. A standalone alarm does not automatically replace a required panel-connected or interconnected system.

Components and scope

  • Suitable sensor or alarm
  • Compatible base or mounting
  • Power, identification and testing provisions

From survey to handover

  1. Survey the building and identify the hazard.
  2. Select compatible equipment and prepare the project design for the required review.
  3. Install, test and document the work; hand over operating information and a maintenance plan.

In Saudi Arabia, the design is reviewed against applicable Saudi Building Code requirements, including SBC 801, and the competent authority’s requirements. Capacity, quantities, coverage and testing follow the project design and manufacturer instructions. Safety licensing remains subject to the authority’s process through Salamah.
