What is it used for?
Heat detectors respond to temperature rather than smoke. Their response and temperature rating are selected for the normal conditions and expected fire hazard in the space.
- Selected kitchens, workshops or dusty spaces where heat detection is permitted and suitable
What does it offer?
- Can reduce unwanted alarms from non-fire smoke-like conditions
Types and key differences
- Fixed temperature
- Responds when its specified temperature threshold is reached.
- Rate of rise
- Responds to a sufficiently rapid temperature increase; combination models also have a fixed threshold.
- System connection
- Both conventional and addressable options exist; connection type is separate from sensing method.
What needs checking before selection?
- Heat detection can respond later than smoke detection. It is not a blanket substitute for smoke detectors required for life safety.
Components and scope
- Detector with suitable temperature rating
- Compatible base and panel connection
- Functional testing and identification
From survey to handover
- Survey the building and identify the hazard.
- Select compatible equipment and prepare the project design for the required review.
- Install, test and document the work; hand over operating information and a maintenance plan.
In Saudi Arabia, the design is reviewed against applicable Saudi Building Code requirements, including SBC 801, and the competent authority’s requirements. Capacity, quantities, coverage and testing follow the project design and manufacturer instructions. Safety licensing remains subject to the authority’s process through Salamah.
