Electric, diesel and jockey fire pump sets
Three different roles in the water supply—not three interchangeable firefighting pumps.

What is it used for?
Main fire pumps supply the flow and pressure required by the hydraulic design. A packaged set may combine electric and diesel-driven fire pumps with a smaller pressure-maintenance pump. The required arrangement is determined for the project.
- Sprinkler, standpipe and other water-based systems requiring a pumped supply
What does it offer?
- A coordinated water supply with a defined role for each pump
Types and key differences
- Electric
- Main firefighting duty using the designed electrical supply.
- Diesel
- An engine-driven fire pump; its standby or duty role follows the design.
- Jockey
- Maintains pressure against small losses and limits unnecessary main-pump starts.
What needs checking before selection?
- The jockey pump is not a substitute for a main fire pump. A three-pump package is not automatically required or sufficient for every building.
Components and scope
- Selected pumps and their controllers
- Water supply, valves, gauges and test arrangements
- Electrical supply and diesel fuel, exhaust and ventilation provisions as applicable
From survey to handover
- Survey the building and identify the hazard.
- Select compatible equipment and prepare the project design for the required review.
- Install, test and document the work; hand over operating information and a maintenance plan.
In Saudi Arabia, the design is reviewed against applicable Saudi Building Code requirements, including SBC 801, and the competent authority’s requirements. Capacity, quantities, coverage and testing follow the project design and manufacturer instructions. Safety licensing remains subject to the authority’s process through Salamah.
