What is it used for?

Stored carbon dioxide is discharged through a designed system to suppress combustion by reducing available oxygen. A fixed system may protect an enclosure or a local hazard, depending on its approved design.

  • Selected machinery and industrial process hazards after specialist assessment

What does it offer?

  • No agent residue on the protected equipment

Types and key differences

Fixed system or portable extinguisher?
A portable CO₂ extinguisher is manually operated for a small suitable fire. It is not a total-flooding installation.

What needs checking before selection?

  • Extinguishing concentrations can be fatal. Do not specify CO₂ as a routine solution for occupied offices or server rooms. Warning, evacuation, isolation and controlled re-entry are essential.

Components and scope

  • CO₂ storage, distribution pipework and discharge nozzles
  • Detection, releasing controls and pre-discharge alarms
  • Engineered personnel safeguards and operating procedures

From survey to handover

  1. Survey the building and identify the hazard.
  2. Select compatible equipment and prepare the project design for the required review.
  3. Install, test and document the work; hand over operating information and a maintenance plan.

In Saudi Arabia, the design is reviewed against applicable Saudi Building Code requirements, including SBC 801, and the competent authority’s requirements. Capacity, quantities, coverage and testing follow the project design and manufacturer instructions. Safety licensing remains subject to the authority’s process through Salamah.
