What is it used for?
Portable equipment supports trained first response to a suitable early-stage fire, while emergency lighting and signs help occupants find a safe route out.
- Workplaces, shops, kitchens, vehicles and public facilities
- Stairs, corridors, exits and evacuation decision points
What does it offer?
- Correct equipment for the identified fire class
- Visible escape guidance when normal power fails
Types and key differences
- Dry chemical powder
- Versatile when appropriately rated, but leaves residue.
- Carbon dioxide
- No agent residue; consider electrical or liquid hazards, ventilation and re-ignition.
- Foam
- Cooling and a vapour-suppressing blanket for compatible fuels.
- Wet chemical
- A specifically rated option for cooking oils and fats; not interchangeable with ordinary foam or powder.
- Automatic powder units
- Fixed modular protection with product-specific coverage, not a portable extinguisher.
What needs checking before selection?
- The wrong extinguisher can spread a fire; failed lights or unclear signs can delay evacuation
Components and scope
- Dry powder, CO₂, foam and wet-chemical extinguishers
- Fire blankets and cabinets
- Refilling and hydrostatic testing
- Emergency lighting and exit signs
- Evacuation plans
From survey to handover
- Survey the building and identify the hazard.
- Select compatible equipment and prepare the project design for the required review.
- Install, test and document the work; hand over operating information and a maintenance plan.
In Saudi Arabia, the design is reviewed against applicable Saudi Building Code requirements, including SBC 801, and the competent authority’s requirements. Capacity, quantities, coverage and testing follow the project design and manufacturer instructions. Safety licensing remains subject to the authority’s process through Salamah.
