Dry chemical suppresses combustion; multipurpose ABC formulations also help cover burning solid materials. The cylinder label identifies the fires for which the extinguisher has been tested.

Types and key differences

Read the symbols, not just “ABC”

Fire-class letters differ between standards: C can mean energised electrical equipment in one system and flammable gases in another. Follow the actual product rating and applicable standard.

What needs checking before selection?

• Powder reduces visibility and leaves residue that may damage sensitive equipment. Ordinary ABC powder is not specialist metal-fire powder or a substitute for wet chemical on cooking-oil fires.

From survey to handover

1. Survey the building and identify the hazard.

3. Install, test and document the work; hand over operating information and a maintenance plan.

In Saudi Arabia, the design is reviewed against applicable Saudi Building Code requirements, including SBC 801, and the competent authority’s requirements. Capacity, quantities, coverage and testing follow the project design and manufacturer instructions. Safety licensing remains subject to the authority’s process through Salamah.
